Albareh in collaboration with Tamkeen and the EDB are pleased to announce a special talk that will be given by

Mr. Barrak Alzaid ,Currently the Director of IVDE Gallery on Thursday 21st February at 7pm at abcad.

Barrak will be talking about the current practices of contemporary art in the Middle East as well as give an overview of its strengths and weaknesses . The role of Contemporary Art Spaces in this part of the world will also be highlighted.

This talk is part of the ALP program recently launched by abcad/Albareh and in cooperation with artist and curator Mo reda and Bahraini artist Hassan Hujairi.

About Barrak AlZaid

Before assuming his role as Director of IVDE Gallery, Dubai, Barrak Alzaid (b. 1985 Kuwait, MA Performance Studies, NYU) a writer, curator, artist, was the Artistic Director of ArteEast. In this role he developed and launched an international residency initiative that included The Watermill Center (New York) and The Sultan Gallery (Kuwait). In addition he has curated a monthly artist talk series featuring leading artists and curators, and he remains the chief editor of the ArteEast Quarterly, a dynamic online portal featuring three publications that highlight contemporary art, literature culture from the Middle East, Turkey, Iran, North Africa and the diaspora. He coordinated the first public March Meeting in 2010 with the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Curatorial works include antinormanybody [2011] and The Anti-Artist Talks at Performa 11 [2011] and he acted as co-editor and curator of For Lives Undone: Gaza Summons its Writers to Speak, an online publication featuring works by Gazan writers, and a series of literary salons at Columbia University's Center for Palestine Studies and the Nuyorican Poets Cafe [2012]. Most recently he was the producer for the New York edition of the Cairo-based TransDance Festival and has produced works at Socrates Sculpture Park, Center for Performance Research, and New York Public Library for Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.

In January 2012 he was a curator-in-residence at The Delfina Foundation. He is a regular contributor Jadaliyya, and has made contributions to Performa Magazine, ArtAsiaPacific Magazine and Ibraaz.
